Best of Month: AotY #11: SASAMI's "Squeeze" via Domino

Back in March I went to a Soccer Mommy show expecting more or less the same thing as always. I had seen them about three or four other times since shows started back up again and they always basically played the same setlist. I wasn’t going to complain, I love that band and seeing them live is always a blast. They did play one new song but I’m not really here to tell you about that. I actually already told this story in a post this year. I’m here to tell you not to skip the opener at any concert you go to.

I watch a lot of friends and my own mother look up set times to show up as soon as the headliner plays and I have to tell you I really do not love that energy. Whatever band is opening for your favorite artist is doing so for a reason. They’re probably your fav’s fav at the moment. They probably worked hard to get there and rehearsed to give you a good show for that night. Selfishly they could also be your new favorite band!

When I watched SASAMI I was absolutely blown away. I needed to hear more and now I have. I’ve had this album on regular rotation all year long. Had I not shown up early for the show I would have known them as the band that had that weird song I heard on BrooklynVegan. I wouldn’t have really gotten it, I wouldn’t have seen the huge smile on Sasami Ashworth’s face as I bought her record. I wouldn’t have had Squeeze on a list where Sometimes, Forever was not.
