Halfloves bang on your hearts this summer

Halfloves are back and after their last single, “C U Later,” I’ve been really hungry for more. Back in March we had a chat with Jeff and checked in on the headspace that created that last, self-critical, single. Now the boys have come through with a bit of a love song for the mid summer.


Right off the bat this intro feels so at peace, like floating through a beautiful dream. That bassline going in the back really hits you with some grooves as well. That bass is what glues the whole song together and that intro part gets put into words so eloquently in the chorus followed by a post chorus that hits like a cold open. I described that part as a dream in my notes before even registering what was said.


You make me feel like I’m floating above myself.


Something I love about Halfloves is their lyricism. It often sounds so casual, so conversational and on “Bass Drum” I’m really invested in the story telling. When you realize that this lover that brings the one behind this song so much love is an ex it hits hard. When I realized that the person has moved on, found someone else and is married it genuinely struck me down like a severe plot twist. This is my favorite Halfloves track yet, do yourself the service of listening to it.

Four Year Strong is a band who has always meant a lot to me growing up in New England. While I Specifically spent my adolescence in RI, Worcester was only a forty-minute ride and most of the shows I attended were out there. I'm less online now, but I have a feeling I know the consensus on this record isn't very hot. Being an over twenty-year-old easycore band in a time where scene bands are nostalgic acts can't be easy. But to be honest I quite enjoyed this one. Analysis paralysis as a record has a lot harder an edge than 2020's Brain Pain . The hardcore elements were never really missing from the Four Year Strong formula, but on this record songs like "aftermath/afterthought" are actual moshable moments, complete with a full breakdown, a lot of intensity and a guitar pedal like a buzzsaw. REVIEW: UNKILLABLE ANGEL by Ada Rook released independently

The Black Dresses split was and continues to be ugly. I never reviewed Laughingfish, the duo’s final record, mostly because I didn’t feel it was my place. While there were some strong tracks present, I felt the two’s strained relationship came through quite clearly and it wasn’t up to some music blogger to weigh in on it. Now Ada Rook has released Unkillable Angel , her first solo record since the split and she makes it hard to not weigh in on. When I heard about this record, I saw warning to stay away, citing Rook as being aggressive, toxic and confrontational, which if you’re attempting to read the record in bad faith I could definitely see. She also invites you to hate her on the album several times on both the tracks about this situation and the one’s written two years ago. Still, this didn’t scare me away, in fact I think Unkillable Angel gives us a deeper look into the situation than we’re led to believe. Review: Coup de Grace by SeeYouSpaceCowboy... via Pure Noise

I wasn't sure what to expect of the jazz influence and direction Coup de Grace was going for, but it seems the band went all in here. This is far from SeeYouSpaceCowboy... with some sax interludes, it shoots for both in tandem. The transition to opening track "Allow Us to Set the Scene" hard cuts from one genre to the other seamlessly. There hasnt really been a SeeYouSpaceCowboy... album this varied in general. "Subtle Whispers to Take Your Breath Away" is very reminiscent of where screamo was in the late 2000s, heavy but with a dramatic flair. This lines up with the sass bands Connie [last name] lists as influences on this band's sound and maintains the heart of it while becoming more accessible than past releases. On Connie, she has become an undeniably excellent front woman at this point. The original selling point of her delivery, the sass-inspired spoken word, is still present.
