REVIEW: Crisis Sigil's "God Cum Poltergeist"

Ada Rook has had an incredibly busy year. In January she and Ash Nerve released Ultra Paradise as Angel Electronics; a record that took some classic elements of screamo and pop rock from the mid-aughts and put a modern and personal spin on them all. Then in May she released Rookie’s Bustle; a collection of unused material from her various projects. Mix in some live performances and I thought that was all we were getting this year. But now she’s fronting a grindcore project; Crisis Sigil with their debut full-length.

Right off the bat you know who this frontwoman is, her style is distinguishable even when she fits it to form with whatever genre is backing her. It’s a Rook classic move to strain her voice, but here she’s taking herself to the extreme, she growls on various songs. Not only in voice though, you can tell there’s Ada Rook production throughout this record whether it be the generated voices, the illusion breaking behind the scenes views or her little cries for help used as outros. Normally I choose some highlights at the end but this is one of those records where you can’t really break it down into its separate parts, it's a holistic body of work and needs to be taken in as such. However, this is a double edged sword. Once you’ve heard one of these tracks you know what this record is about. While Rook does try some different approaches at the end of the day grindcore is grindcore, but she’s still better at it than most, like most things, so it’s a good idea to see all that Crisis Sigil has to offer.

A lot of -core dropped this week. I myself covered Better Lovers and Crisis Sigil but there was also Circuit Circuit (check out “Slander Eats Slander” on their EP) and Hazing Over. I don’t think I’ll review all of it, but I urge you to check all of them out. This was my pick for -core of the week, but each of these four bands has something different to offer, don’t hold yourself to just one.
