Puppy Angst are knocked out on new song

Philadelphia’s Puppy Angst have released “TKO” as part of Fire Talk’s Open Tab single series. In this series Fire Talk releases singles alongside interviews with various bands and artists and Puppy Angst’s single in that series comes out today. I was able to hear this song just a bit early and have been really enjoying jamming to it in my own time.

Puppy Angst doesn’t waste any time easing you into this one and the song kicks off immediately within a verse. At its core, “TKO” is a simple indie tune, nice to close your eyes and sway to. The lyrical content on this one is very upset, very pointed, seemingly from someone at the end of their rope from being used. This is made abundantly clear in the chorus where the narrator is almost bargaining with themselves. Trying to tell themself that they’re a masochist, or a pacifist, or anything to convince themselves that it's their own fault that someone else is hurting them. In the second verse there’s that same sense of swaying for the listener. For the narrator, however, things are quieter, more defeated, it's a real emotional journey.

What gets me about “TKO” overall is that with each passing part of the song it gets less aggressive and more chilled out. We’ve all been in a place where we allow ourselves to get knocked out by expectations and the weight of what those around us can impart over and over again, getting weaker every time. We don’t have to put ourselves there however, we can stand up for ourselves, it’s a good thing. It’s made apparent after that realization is made verbal in the song itself and after that we’re treated to a nice little celebratory jam session, it's a fitting finale.

“TKO” is out right now! You can listen to the song and check out Puppy Angst’s Open Tab interview in the links below. I’d like to thank Puppy Angst for allowing me to hear this song a bit early and I’d urge you to check out the song for yourself.
