Best of Month: Asking Artists Their AotY

What does your favorite DIY band listen to? This year I asked five artists in the scene what their favorite albums of 2022 were and they were all so excited about their choices. I want to thank everyone who took part in this as this is the most important part of running this blog to me; being a part of a community and sharing music with each other.

Zari Alexandria chose Adam Melchor’s Here Goes Nothing! (R&R Digital / Warner)

This debut album tells the story of a long-distance relationship with all the ups and downs and in-betweens. Adam's music consists of compelling storytelling and imagery through the roof. Here Goes Nothing! takes that aspect of his work to the next level. Each lyric is a punch in the gut. My eyes are going to run out of water because of how emotionally draining this album is, which is fine with me. The production is his strongest as he and producer Henry Kwapis created a cohesive sound throughout the project while each song maintained its own special elements. I hope that other people give the record a listen and enjoy the tracks as much as I do.

Matt Burridge of pulses. chose The Callous Daoboys’ Celebrity Therapist

I’m a little biased since the Daoboys are friends of mine, but I keep going back to this record and I really think it’s a masterfully written mathcore record. They somehow found a way to make a record that can both catch the attention of mathcore fans but also feels accessible enough to draw people in who don’t normally listen to the genre. It’s one of the only records this year that I will always listen to in full, every track fits right where it should be on the record and it all flows nicely. My favorite tracks are “Star Baby,” “A Brief Article Regarding Time Loops,” “Violent Astrology” and “Beautiful Dude Missile,” which I realize is half the record but honestly all eight tracks are pretty equally great and serve their purpose very well.

David Bello of The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid to Die chose Chat Pile's God’s Country (The Flenser)

I think I first listened to this because of the photo on the cover. It reminds me of growing up in a rural place and has a tone to match. It's aggressive music with lyrics that remind me of [novel] A Feast of Snakes by Harry Crews. On track two, the vocalist asks;

"Why do people have to live outside?"

There's a sincerity to this music that I don't feel often anymore.

J of Fox Teeth chose Pollyanna's Slime (I Surrender)

I’d have to say that Pollyanna’s Slime is my AOTY. I was lucky enough to see the songs go from quick ideas to a full-length LP. All biases aside, it was my most anticipated release this year, and lived up to, and surpassed, expectations!

Owen Trawick of Everybody’s Worried About Owen chose Prince Daddy and the Hyena’s self-titled record

I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t a part of me that wanted to pick something more obscure to sound cooler but this album is fucking stellar. Every PDaddy album feels like it builds on the last and this one is no exception. I will sit down to listen to one track off this album and end up listening to the entire thing every time. There’s so many small details that add up to create a sonic world you can just fall into and suddenly you blink and the album is over, so you go back to “Adore The Sun” and start it all over again.
