Last week in music, 9/26/21 - 10/2/21
Andres - Adventures of a DIY Astronaut (kill iconic)
Been wanting to talk about this artist for awhile. He does some really unique stuff that mixes progressive post-hardcore and Latin music. All the singles leading up to this were so creative and simply great songs.
Asking Alexandria - See What’s on the Inside (Better Noise)
While I really didn’t like their 2020 record I checked this out but mostly expected the same thing. This is a much better transition into the hard rock sound the band is going for but it’s ultimately not for me. Much more listenable of a record though.
Bilmuri - 400LB BACK SQUAT
Johnny Franck is here to deliver his yearly dose of Bilmuri. Really glad this formula of releasing these seven track albums once or twice a year is working for him and I feel the quality of songwriting gets an inch better each time. Not much new going on in terms of direction so if you’ve liked this project to this point this will be no different.
illuminati hotties - Let Me Do One More (Hopeless / Snack Shack Tracks)
This album’s singles were evenly split between raging pop punk and heart-wrenching sad tracks. Based on those four it was easily my most anticipated record remaining in the year. There’s more sadness, which threw me off on first listen, the more I listened to it though I really felt the mood the record was trying to convey and its been on constant repeat ever since.
Shad - TAO (Secret City)
I was very into this in the first half but it turned sour pretty fast. There’s great production but there’s a lot of discussion that basically sums up to “technology bad.” Pretty disappointed if I’m being honest.
Cherie Amour - Internal Discussions (Equal Vision)
Debut EP by a band that’s a little hard to quantify. There’s sections of hardcore, there’s sections of hip hop, there’s alt rock and pop catchiness here. I’ve seen them categorized in the “vibecore” umbrella and I think that’s appropriate. Either way it’s a good release! If you’ve followed the single rollout though, there's only two new tracks for you to absorb here.
Goody Grace - Nostalgia Kills (Atlantic)
If you enjoyed “Don’t Forget Where You Came From” earlier this year this is basically a more lowkey take on that sound. Fairly enjoyable release that I wanted to quickly point out.
This week’s most anticipated: Magdalena Bay - Mercurial World (Luminelle Recordings)
