Last Week in Music, 7/4/21 - 7/10/21

Two very major album releases this week and a whole lot of singles.

The Maine - XOXO: From Love & Anxiety in Real Time (8123 / Photo Finish Records)

I 100% do not have to report that The Maine has a new record. Their fanbase is one of the most dedicated I have ever seen and it shows that they really do this for the fans at this point. Even if you look at the Spotify graphic with some of the tracks it reads; “A band called The Maine made this for you.” Bouncy, yet heartfelt pop rock that’s great for a summer drive into the sunset.

Vince Staples - Vince Staples (UMG Recordings)

On the total opposite spectrum from The Maine we have this short hip hop record with a chilled out groove. Vince gets really personal here with his history growing up in North Long Beach, CA and the struggles that came with it but it’s certainly not an experience I want to spoil for you.

Clown Core - 1234

Jazz-funk act Clow Core has released another one of these under 10 minute EPs. Not a crazy amount I can really say here but if you like the genre this is a fun listen.

Ice Nine Kills - Hip to be Scared (feat. Jacoby Shaddix, Fearless Records)

Ice Nine Kills have announced The Silver Scream 2: Welcome to Horrorwood (yes, that’s the real title) for an October release, serving as a sequel to their 2018 record. On that first one the band took 13 horror movies and constructed songs around each one and this is that again, this one inspired by American Psycho. The track itself is… fine? It’s certainly not bad but my issue is we’re leaning so much into this horror theme that it's starting to feel forced. I thought those titles were bad but this track just goes out of it’s way to present itself as a scene in a movie we even go on a skit that’s a joke on the whole “do you like Huey Lewis & the News” scene that ends with an incredibly cheesy “CUT above the rest” joke that feels like it’s stopping the song to make sure the joke landed with you. That and Jacoby Shaddix here is just so underutilized I feel like he was put there for the name pull alone.
