Weekly Winners, week of 5/16/21 - 5/22/21

Kaonashi - Dear Lemon House, You Ruined Me: Senior Year (Equal Vision Records)

Very cool, progressive, weird post-hardcore concept album from Kaonashi this week about a troubled high school student from an abusive home. References a ton of bands from Lorna Shore to Coheed & Cambria. (Even has a Coheed inspired run of final tracks.) If you’re a fan of the genre you’ll get something out of this for sure.

Olivia Rodrigo - SOUR (Geffen Records)

Not even sure I have to report anything here. This record has been all over my timeline and a single from it is even the current billboard 100 number 1. Pop record that shows depth and character detailing the decline of a relationship.

One Morning Left - Hyperactive

This is one I’ve been looking forward to for awhile. The singles have all been some of the biggest for me so far this year. If you like the party side of crabcore or you like Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas but wish they had a bit more of a variety then I urge you to check this record out.

Waterparks - Greatest Hits (300 Entertainment)

Another one I’m sure needs no introduction. This has some highlights for me but I just really only vibe with the pop punk tracks. The more low key emo tracks sound fairly uninspired.

We Were Sharks - New Low (Revival Recordings)

Another one I really anticipated. Just a fun pop punk record with all the singles right at the front so you get a blast of new at the end. Easy recommendation but not reinventing the wheel or anything.

The Devil Wears Prada - ZII (Solid State Records)

Long awaited sequel to the smash hit EP from 2010. Was really disappointed by the singles on this thing as I discussed when “Termination” dropped. The whole EP pleasantly surprised me though. Takes the best part of every era of TDWP and takes it to new heights. If you are a fan of the band… well you’ve probably already heard this.

Mannequin Pussy - Perfect (Epitaph)

Not a band I usually am a fan of but this was a really cool, short release! Not sure what else to say about this one except to give it the 13 minutes it deserves.

Eskimo Callboy - MMXX - Hypa Hypa Edition (Century Media Records)

Wasn’t a really on board with this release as I never really support a band making their entire career out of one song. That being said, the thing that’s cool about this release is the 6 “Hypa Hypas” aren’t remixes… they’re covers by other artists! Everything from deathcore to country. Very interesting deluxe edition.

K.Flay - TGIF (feat. Tom Morello) (BMG)

This is a cool single from K.Flay kinda sounding like a cross section between her last two records. My issue here is with the very phoned in edginess because Tom Morello is there? Like the Rage Against the Machine line? Kinda cringe!

As December Falls - Nothing on You

lil aaron -  THAT ONE SONG (feat. Lil Lotus, Hazheart Records)
