Weekly Winners, 5/2/21 - 5/8/21

As opposed to last week, which was  more single heavy with very little albums this week was very album heavy. With a lot of good too! The album I expected to be my second favorite of the year is finally here (stay tuned for next week) and some other great stuff too! Let's get right into it.

Ashe - Ashlyn (Mom+Pop)

Listened to this on recommendation. Finneas produced, (or at least partially, and he has a feature) just fun pop songs. Have a bit of an issue with the way the record is paced in some ways but other than that it is good.

chloe moriondo - Blood Bunny (Fueled by Ramen)

This was for sure way up there on my most anticipated list of the year and now that it’s here I am not at all disappointed. Well structured pop rock with incredible vocal range and infectious melodies. Lyrics can be a bit childish at times but the little things are so easy to overlook here. Will try to get a full review out to better go over my thoughts.

Ghost Iris - Comatose (Long Branch Records)

Ghost Iris has had a single or two over the course of the year that I’ve enjoyed and this album was a good time to listen to! If you miss The Color Morale I actually highly recommend. It doesn’t have much of the self-help lyricism but sonically this band is really in that ballpark.

Sumo Cyco - Initiation (Napalm Records)

Something I was expecting to not like at all and find to be a bit of a gimmick. Third installment in a conceptual series, label debut from a long time existing band from a former Canadian pop star. Just a cool rock record.

Weezer - Van Weezer (Clash Music/Atlantic Records)

I keep expecting to not like Weezer at all as I’ve never been a fan in the first place and they’ve even fallen off but here we are, a second album by them in one calendar year that I had fun with. This one is them attempting to be an 80s era rock band and… as far as execution I have to give them credit. There’s some bad moments here but all in all fun probably helped when I first listened while driving.

Salem - Salem II (Roadrunner Records)

If you aren’t familiar with Salem, it’s Will Gould’s (Creeper) other band. Unlike Creeper who is like an early 2000s emo band sent to the present, Salem is more a pop punk project with double-time and catchy chorus structures. It still has that Will Gould touch of including things like witches and vampires in the lyricism just in a more fun way.

rationale. - Incentive

Dan Lampton is back?! Well this band’s been around since 2019 I just somehow missed it. Includes members of Knuckle Puck as well. Little song about hating your retail job which I’m sure we can all use, especially now given COVID restrictions loosening up.
