Weekly Winners, week of 4/18/21 - 4/24/21

The Prize Fighter Inferno - The City Introvert (Evil Ink Records)

Prize Fighter is the solo project of Coheed & Cambria’s lead singer/guitarist Claudio Sanchez. It’s the project’s second full length following-up My Brother’s Blood Machine from all the way back in 2006. On this effort he’s taking up a more electronic ballad approach as opposed to the folk songs on the first record. It’s a fine album but there isn’t much new material here. Between the re-released tracks from Death Rattle, that EP from last year, and the singles only four new songs here.

Tilian - Factory Reset (Rise Records)

Tilian Pearson of Dance Gavin Dance has released a new solo effort. Have to applaud Tilian on his vocals of course, but every time he releases one of these albums it never feels like some throw away tracks from another project. It feels very much like his own body of work. This may be my highest recommendation this week.

Victory Over the Sun - Nowherer

New album from one-woman microtonal avant-metal project and the first on streaming services. Instrumentally this really impressed me and I highly recommend it if you’re looking for heavy in the week of a lot of poppier stuff.

Chapel - Room Service (Rise Records)

Another case of too many singles, indie pop band Chapel has released… basically one new song while packaging together other singles from earlier in this year onto one release. That being said if you missed those songs I would check this out. Catchy and has elements of indie, electronic, rock and more. I guarantee you’ll find something in these short nine minutes.

Kero Kero Bonito - Civilisation II (Polyvinyl Record Co.)

Follow up to 2019’s Civilisation I though apparently it wasn’t really planned to do a series of these. Glad we got this though and honestly if you’ve liked KKB to this point this is a nice flavor of every sound they’ve always done.

The Devil Wears Prada - Termination (Solid State Records)

First awaited single from the years awaited Zombie II EP and… don’t get me wrong it’s good but I do have some issues. First off, Mike Hranica’s vocals still sound just as strained as they have been in really the last few album cycles. That and the heaviness and feel of the track feel a bit phoned in. The drum roll in the bridge section goes on for way too long and the radio sound effects are attempting to re-create a magic from the 2010 original work that I just don’t think works here.

We Are Defiance - Regret

We Are Defiance kind of quietly made a return this week with their first new music in eight years! This one’s an acoustic ballad about some relationship issues it seems. Very cool to see this band make a return. I'll be following this closely.
