Eternal Void - Serenity in the Black (EV Records)

In a scene where so many heavy bands fall into the same, mundane routine of sound it’s always nice when one is a breath of fresh air. Serenity in the Black felt different than the loads of other metal-aligned acts that released this week, it’s a bit hard to describe but definitely give this a try.



Evanescence - The Bitter Truth

If you had told me that in 2021 this band would end up on a list of music I enjoyed over the past week I’d probably have not believed you. Yet here we are. Evanescence doesn’t try to pretend their reinventing the wheel between albums and maybe that’s what makes the familiar sounds that they always push sound so welcoming. You know what this album sounds like, but the songs are still good so it deserves it’s time.


Origami Button - No Parking

If you like bands like Hail the Sun, Royal Coda, things like that this will definitely be for you. Swancore feel yet with it’s own feel about. A bit relaxed in nature compared to other post-hardcore releases which is a nice touch.



Arkells - You Can Get It (feat. K.Flay)

Checked out this new Arkells track for the K.Flay feature and wasn’t let down, she’s great here. Instrumental is neat and groovy too and has some really nice keys. Just not crazy about the vocal delivery from Max Kerman here.


beabadoobee - Last Day on Earth (Dirty Hit)

“Fake it Flowers” was an album I really enjoyed from last year, just found out about it too late to include it in the year end list. So when I saw she had a new single I jumped at it. The song is very well written and I did ultimately end up enjoying it. My one gripe here is the production really drowns out the vocals to the point that they’re really hard to make out. Still excited for the EP this comes off of and will likely be covering in the spring.


Galleons - Let’s Pretend (feat. Garret Repp) (Famined Records)

Galleons has released another single from what is becoming my most anticipated release all year! This one features Garret Repp from The Color Morale fame and comes with an announcement of their self titled album May 14th! It’s definitely the weakest of the three singles but in the best way! It’s still a banger!


Lil Nas X - MONTERO (Call Me by Your Name) (Columbia Records)

Unless you’ve been living under a rock this week you’ve probably heard of this song and the large backlash against Lil Nas X for being Satanic or whatever the Facebook mom’s want to complain about lately. Underneath all that controversy though it’s just a fun pop song so I’d actually back listening to this one.


Stepson - I Wish (SHARPTONE)

Stepson released a new record last week called Help Me, Help You but I want to point you in this tracks direction in particular. Slow, groovy jam and pretty different from the rest of the record.

The Black Dresses split was and continues to be ugly. I never reviewed Laughingfish, the duo’s final record, mostly because I didn’t feel it was my place. While there were some strong tracks present, I felt the two’s strained relationship came through quite clearly and it wasn’t up to some music blogger to weigh in on it. Now Ada Rook has released Unkillable Angel , her first solo record since the split and she makes it hard to not weigh in on. When I heard about this record, I saw warning to stay away, citing Rook as being aggressive, toxic and confrontational, which if you’re attempting to read the record in bad faith I could definitely see. She also invites you to hate her on the album several times on both the tracks about this situation and the one’s written two years ago. Still, this didn’t scare me away, in fact I think Unkillable Angel gives us a deeper look into the situation than we’re led to believe. Review: The Metaphysical Tech Support Hotline by Topiary Creatures released independently

How many unintentional hiatuses can one music blog go on? As it stands, I don’t know how we here at AsterTracks find music anymore. We disappeared for a minute there, which we’ve probably explained in an earlier post. My previous primary source of information is currently a bit uninhabitable. I can tell you I discovered this record on a friend’s Instagram story, months ago, which is about the amount of backstory you need. It’s difficult, at least in the context of this album, to pin Topiary Creatures to a mood, let alone a genre. Opening track “Trader Joe’s Frosted Mini-Wheats” starts off soft and beautifully and turns heavy in under a minute, not wrathful, but heavy. There are two vocalists present here and when the second comes in it's like a set change, the instrumentation present is as clear an image in my mind as if I were watching a play. EP Reviews - Penny Bored, Hot Mulligan, Kaonashi, Kississippi

Penny Bored - I'M BORED (Open Your Ears) For the past few years I've had my eyes on Penny Bored, a pop rock act from Dallas, TX. While I've always admired this artists presence and some tracks here and there, I haven't felt like there was a strong release to point listeners to. This changes on I'M BORED! a sort of re-debut under Open Your Ears records. On I'M BORED , Penny Bored has finally made good on the influences they only began tapping in on with previous releases. Songs like "on hold" work because you've heard this brand of pop rock before, but you haven't heard them with this author's stories or pain. We get a little more specific on "think of me" as well as "gossip. On these tracks they are very clearly aimed at someone specific, but both are catchy enough to the point of not mattering. "Think of me" is a special track on this EP as it sees some hip hop influenced vocal melodies and a piano charged rock ho...
