Weekly Winners, week of 3/14/21 - 3/20/21

This was a weird, sleeper week for me personally. I knew the scene at large was really looking forward to ERRA this week but wasn’t really part of the hype there. That being said still had some good stuff to listen to this week! Looking forward to a lot of singles in the coming week too. As always let me know if there’s something you think I’ve missed. In other news, working on two posts that aren’t my usual report or review. Hoping to get more of my opinions of some not so new stuff out there. Look forward to it!

ERRA - ERRA (UNFD)

Like the First and Forever EP last week the community is very excited for this one and I’m not trying to take that away from anyone! I enjoyed my time on this record this week. Don’t think it’ll be an on repeat for me throughout the year but there is so much good here. Definitely give it a shot if you’re in the mood for something heavy.

LANDMVRKS - Lost in the Waves (Arising Empire)
Now this heavy album I think will stick with me a bit more. You don’t really get too many bands make it out of France but I’m so glad this is here. “Overrated” was a single that really crept up on me in terms of enjoyment and I’m glad I checked out the record was really happy with this.

Rivals - Sad Looks Pretty on Me (Smartpunk Records)
Alright, enough discourse, here is the best album this week. Rivals takes elements from all over the scene, all over music in general. There’s pop punk here, there’s post-hardcore here, there’s some sects of hip hop and R&B here it’s fantastic. Also another album with a sad voicemail esque effect so… you know. (Not actually voicemail but whatever.)

Lil Mariko - Lil Mariko (Tactical Music)

Some fun hyperpop that I almost missed entirely! Lyrically it’s more on the funny, NSFW side but this is a fun release give it a try if you like that kind of thing.

Serj Tankian - Elasticity (United Trust of Sonic Preservation)

If you’re looking for a new System of a Down release (like, those two singles from last year aren’t enough.) this just might do it for you? It isn’t perfect but it has that same sense and political tackle as SoaD. Serj shows his age here, however, using language that is a bit outdated so just be wary there if sensitive.

Magnolia Park - TDHS2 (feat. Oliver Baxxter) / Singing

Magnolia Park, debut EP Dream Eater out now! Really liking the last two tracks on here. “TDHS2” is a very fun pop punk cut and “Singing” just sounds massive in so many ways.

Poppy - Eat (Grammy Performance)
Grammy’s last week, not very hype on award shows myself but Poppy unveiled this new track during the show! Really heavy and she even screams here. I was honestly expecting another genre shift based on previous interviews but we’ll take this one.

Green Day - Insomniac (25th anniversary edition) (Reprise Records)

Almost didn’t include this because it isn’t new and even though we did that for Black Sabbath a bit ago it almost feels like cheating for content. In that same respect, however, a re-release is a good chance for you to check out a classic record for the genre itself. It’s the same basic tracklist just with some live tracks slapped on there. Give it a shot! It’s the “Brain Stew” record.
