Weekly Winners, Week of 1/31/21 - 2/6/21

Foo Fighters - Medicine at Midnight (Roswell records)

I am so excited that this is good. Foo Fighters music has been pretty bland for about a decade. To be fair, that’s what happens to a lot of these radio smash hits. They lose steam but not fame, so it outputs a lot of pretty mediocre music into the world. This, however, really put a smile on my face. Even the first single, “Shame Shame,” which nearly put me to sleep on release makes a lot more sense in context with the record.

Hayley Williams - FLOWERS for VASES/descansos (Atlantic records)

Surprise album from the Paramore front woman. Petals for Armor, her 2020 release really left a great impression on me but it was very much in the realm of comfortability for her. This takes things to the next level and puts Hayley into a league of her own. Its very much of a quarantine album and has Hayley working basically by herself. Looking forward to listening to this more throughout the course of the year.

Underoath - THEY’RE ONLY CHASING SAFETY LIVE RECORDING (LIVE FROM THE OBSERVATORY, TAMPA, FL, 2020)

Underoath has been releasing these live albums since last year. I didn’t realize till the end of this one that they were a part of a live stream. TOCS is a pretty classic album and this version is honestly pretty high quality compared to the other live albums, which were pretty rough production wise and generally the vocals sounded bad. (You should still hear the original if you haven’t, it’s pretty important to the genre.)

Amarionette - Get Back

Last year Amarionette released their record Sunset on This Generation. While that record was good and even reached my top 50 of the year it did fall a BIT short of being great. Really trying to keep my eye on this band in hopes they reach that height. I don’t think this quite does but it’s certainly worth a listen.

Dream - Roadtrip (feat. PmButa)

New single from a Minecraft YouTuber of all things. It’s a good pop song over all but I wish the vocals were a bit more enthused and inspired. It’s a debut single though who's to say it won’t improve?

Galleons - Better the Devil You Know (feat. Phil Bayer)

Galleons is another of those bands that I will always shine a light on when they can. This single and the other from the upcoming album have been fantastic. God, this chorus and the “never again, never again, I know” bit just gets stuck in my head for the whole day from when I hear this.

NOFX - Fuck Euphemism (Fat Wreck Chords)

This track is… good… sonically but there is a crux. The lyrics are really, really cringe. Fat Mike attacks things like gender identities and pronouns and the like and almost turns me off to the whole thing as it just is not a good look. Just poor taste, but it’s instrumentally sound.
